Led replacement bulbs

"Better than using a resistor would be a chopper circuit to reduce the duty cycle. You can make one with a power mosfet with sufficient current rating and a 555 timer chip. Lots of electronics info out there on the net".

It's also more in keeping with the Saab design philosophy ... why use one simple part when 10 will do?

Good point, thus one should also include a low start function to the circuit and also build in a sensor to determine when the 555 is on the way out (unlikely anyway but you have to be sure) and then just for good measure, locate the control box behind the heater matrix.

OK, case closed then. I don't like to see politics introduced here in the Saab group. Labeling a broad issue as belonging to one particular group seemed like a bad thing.

I don't either. That is why I took particular care not to mention a political group, or anything political. I used a word to describe an ideology that some people hold, regardless of their political affiliation - assuming that they even have one. Did you possibly mistake "liberal" with "Libertarian"? ;-)

I think, at least in the USA, that "liberal" does denote a specific group and probably a party. Likewise "conservative" does generally get aligned with one particular party too.

As a person with an odd mix of both sets of values, I try to avoid the party labels myself... but they are an issue. I hear both used as "insults" in the political arena.

Yeah let's just keep the politics out entirely, I finally left some other groups I was in for years because they'd been reduced lately to childish political bickering and mud slinging, driving off most of those who enjoyed discussing the topic of the group.
