SAAB 9-5 Aero HOT

Hi I have driven BMW's for the past 7 years, but prior to that had 2 SAAB 9000 Carlssons...

I am considering buying a 9-5 HOT AERO AUTO. The car has 112,000 on the clock, but appears (from photos) to be in good condition.

The seller does not know if the turbo has been changed, but says that there is no Blue smoke.

The car has full Service History from SAAB to 100,000, and from a specialist at 108,000.

Does anyone have any advice on what I should look for, or be aware of on these cars.

What should I look for on the Auto box??? Are these likely to fail? (I required a new manual box on my 9000 Carlsson @ 120,000 miles)

Any advice appreciated

Thanks

Why not get an AA or RAC check ?

Why would you want an auto box on an Aero ? This puzzles me !

I presume that the Aero was made with an auto box?? or is this highly unusual?

In my UK '94 catalogue the 9000 Aero is listed only with manual transmission. I would assume that anyone wanting the performance wouldn't want an auto transmission. 0-60 mph in 6.7 secs. Times may have changed though.

Autobox was an option, but the Aero was regarded as SAAB's 'sports' model, so a manual may be more appropriate, choice is yours! Same BHP auto and manual, but auto torque is slightly less as it looses the manuals overboost function. Turbo should be OK as long as the history is cast iron and fully synthetic oil was used, the Aero turbo unit is more reliable than the lpt's unit. A rough buyers guide here:

...and on the US side of the pond, the 9000 Aero was available with automatic transmission, but it was only equipped with Aero appointments (seats, badges, etc). The high-performance Aero engine was only mated with manual transmission. Since the automatic could barely handle the power from the standard full pressure turbo, the reason for this is obvious. I concur with the conclusion of "What is the point of automatic in a performance car".
