While getting my SES-light-related problem fixed, the tech noted that the torque axis mount had collapsed, which is going to cost me $165 to repair. Is this something I can put off, or does letting it slide for a while put me at risk for seriously damaging the engine and/or powertrain?

Gary Kirchherr typed until their fingers bled, and came up with:
you could put it off, or you could spend $40 at your local autoparts store and do it yourself. simply put a jack under the oil pan (you can even use the spare tire jack if you don't have any other one), and remove the 3 bolts from the front cover of the engine, and the 2 from the mounting bracket. installation is the oposite. you'll need a 15mm deep socket to do the job.
Mine crapped out about every 50k miles. Also I needed a stud kit and I can't remember the cost. Quite a few have done it themselves (not me), and Kevin Keller's reply sounds straight-forward if you do your own work.
I think Lane, Kirk and Bandit (to name a few) have done theirs too.

I've done the one on my son's '96 SL2 twice. Not a big deal if you can turn a basic wrench. I agree with Jonnie's assessment of Kevin's post.

It's pretty easy. What Kevin said. Jack under the oil pan to support, change mount........
