Great day for Studebakering ...til

Finally got my hawk on road after she was on her 16" perch all winter! I started last winter's project last November and finished 1:15 Am Saturday morning. During that time I have managed to install:

1/4 drain line in the gas tank gas tank liner,NOS gas sender unit Rust repair under trunk stiffener and Gas tank support. (rust from inside the truck) Vapor lock drain line Cut the centre of the brake backing Plates for the flanged axle install Fairborn's Axles Welded traction bars Rear sway bar Rear Brake lines Differential Service Bled the brakes Chromed my valve covers and installed Install a Silvertone 2 1/4" SS exhaust with medium tone mufflers Installed a JVC stereo c/w USB Stick under drivers seat Alpine amp under passenger seat, mounted 6X9's speaker in the rear deck with a 4x6" transition Covered the rear deck carboard with 2 layers of Black speaker cloth to hid the speaker Built 4" carpeted speaker pods in the front kick panels, then clipped the bass in the front speakers with capacitors

I cranked the stereo, fired her up, took her for a carwash, Gas her up (premium of Course) Booted around town to test the brakes, took her up the Highway ramp (Sway Bar works Great!) Getting better traction on the green's. Had a real great time and got back home around 3:00 am!

Saturday afternoon took her out again, went out for dinner (Thai food) .

Sunday morning I tried to start the Hawk and the Battery was dead. I thought must have wired the stereo wrong and it drained the battery. Gave her a good hour long drive and the ampere gauge showing a charge. The car just dies! It was a 30 minute walk from home so I went to get my truck. I'm thinking it must be the Alternator, could be the regulator. Well I finally got the Hawk home and now I am waiting on a Battery charge. I'll test the alternator to see if it is putting out a 35A charge. I think I am toast!

Looks to me like I'm in the market for a Alternator. I would like to find an Avanti Style 40 amp. Does any one have a core for sale?

I took the Alternator out this morning and took it to the local rewind shop. The shop tested it and it is putting out 35 amps. Alternator is fine. At this point I have a bad battery (which is one year old) or the regulator is shot.

I had the amplifier installed in my 64 Lark years ago also with a Prestolite

35Amp Alternator and had no troubles. I doubt the amplifier would draw more current than the Alternator puts out. I did not have my lights on so power comsumption would be at a minumum. When I get this back together I will test the ampere draw of the amplifier.

Allen, could be a battery problem. If the ammeter shows a charge while the engine is running, it's probably not the regulator, unless it shows only a very slight charge into a partially dead battery. Dirty or corroded battery connections can cause this problem. Is your battery ground cable attached to an exhaust manifold bolt? Shouldn't be; they get hot and oxidize the copper. Attach it to a water manifold bolt on the front of the engine.

Also look for such things as trunk, glove box, and underhood lamps that are staying on when the respective lids are closed.

Good luck,

Thanks for the information Gord,

I took the Alternator to the rewind shop this morning. It's perfect. Dropped in at the Parts Source this morning (they were nice enough to charge the battery) and came back this afternoon and was told the battery was shot! Purchased a new Champion Battery.

Hawks up and running again.

20 amps, what a whimpy amp. The Rockford Power 1000's in my old demo van drew 150 amps each, and there were 3 of them. The 6 bus batteries with the dual 200 amp alternators would keep them going on the road , but we usually had it on the 4 built in battery charger plugged in the wall.
