Greensburg, Kansas destroyed by tornado

As many have probably seen on the news, the town was 95% obliterated last night in a huge tornado. Deaths may not stop at nine. Had this 1.4-mile wide twister hit a more populated area or a metropolitan area, the destruction would have been mind-boggling. It's hard to find the words to console the good people of this hard-working American farm town. I didn't mark this as OT because when we stopped in Greensburg in the early

90s to see the world's largest hand-dug well, we saw some Studebakers too. We saw an old church that had been converted in to an antique store. Since we weren't in a hurry we stopped to check it. In the back yard were three or four Studebaker farm wagons. Paul Johnson

I just went through all the "Kansas" entries in our SDC Directory. No SDC members with addresses in Greensburg. Agree with you, Paul; it is terrible. BP

We do have members living in cities and towns not far from the path the 6 hour tornado took last night. It didn't just hit Greensburg (the Pallasite Meteor is gone, too), but also Trousdale, Macksville, and Ellinwood - all to the north.

Tonight there have been a number of new tornados in the same counties nearly along the same tracks of destruction. The bad weather is supposed to continue in Kansas until Wednesday, so who knows what might happen?

I have been there several times also. my uncle lived there from

1980-1987..... I am wondering what their old house looked like...

a comfortable 2 story house, with an enclosed porch on 3 sides... a block off the main street, and quiet neighbors... thw whole block across from them was a storage lot for a tractor dealer

nice friendly litle town.

It's not over yet for Kansas - we've had more tornados Sunday morning and afternoon. The dry line and wet line is starting to slowly move east bringing storms closer to Wichita, Topeka, and Kansas City. Severe weather continues to be expected through midweek.

By the way - the Weather Service determined that the Greensburg tornado registered as an F5 at over 205MPH and a mile and a half wide.It destroyed parts of 4 other Kansas towns, and the President just declared Kiowa County a Federal Disaster Area.

I consider myself fortunate not to have been involved in any of that mess on my way back to TX from SB. About all I got on my way home was about an hour driving through some of the hardest rain I have ever seen between McAlester & Atoka, OK this morning. Hwy 69 was flooded so badly that it was virtually impassable in a few places, and visibility was near zero. No hail or funnel clouds, though.
