Some 8,500 tons of scrap tires shipped from the U.S. to China for disposal and resale have been seized by Chinese customs officials.
The illegally shipped tires were confiscated at Dongjiangku Port in Guangzhou, China, officials said, and three men were arrested.
Huangpu Customs officials found the tires in late December in 366 shipping containers. Customs officials think the tires were shipped between December 2008 and February 2009 and may have been at the port for almost a year.
Importing waste tires to China is illegal, officials said, but selling scrap tire materials for oil refining and retreading can be highly profitable.
