That's how the natives pronounced the name of a sleek spotted cat native to their Amazon region. William Lyons, of Coventry, named a car after him. Judging by the phonetic spelling, above, that the explorers brought back (along with some cats), the Brits have it right as far as the pronunciation goes.
I always hear a Brit say it more like 'Jag-You-Are'.
Ypu're right. This was just to show the three sylables aspect. The plant at Browns Lane ("The Jag") was just a short walk and I saw may prototypes and pre-production down at the bottom of my street where the nearest "arade" of shops was. One time, at the barber shop, I was talking about my sister, in San Diego, not being able to get information about the new S-type. Alan said, point to the next chair, "Tell this guy about it - not me." He was on the B/D and took the information. Early the next morning she got a call from the Ford luxury group, with the caller saying, "I was told I better call you, but I don't know why!"
She didn't buy the car - not enough chrome on it!
