My Defender smells

Bought 13 yr old Defender from a Farrier, and even after a year it stinks (due to horse muck no doubt). Washed all seats in hot antiseptic solution in the summer and left them in the sun to dry. No improvement.

How could I go about tracking down inexpensive replacment seats?

Paddocks.... or Exmoor Trim depending on how inexpensive inexpensive is IYSWIM.

Are you sure it's not just EP90 (smells like cat pee)

It wont just be the seat mate, the whole car will smell of horse shit. Ammonia is good for killing most stinks, it smells even worse than shit & makes your eyes water! But it does work.

Have you given it a good powerwashing inside & out? use one that has a dosing pump & use some ammonia or bleach type cleaner.

The usual smell associated with shit or owt else like that is bacteria based & you need to kill the bacteria to kill the smell.

Febreeze.

I mostly ride motorbikes through all weather so my jacket, gloves and crash hat smell a bit strongly at times. I do wash them but the smell still lingers so a quick blast with Febreeze and I'm good for another month.

Sensibly, yes, no reason why not!

You say youve washed the seats. Is it not possible to take out the carpet and wash that too? I did my car carpets last month. It was amazing how much dirt came out! I hosed em. Then scrubbed them down with cleaner before hanging them and rinsing them until the water ran off clear.

While the carpet is out you can brush/hoover and wash (if necesssary) the bare chassis.

With the seats in my car it was also possible to strip the seats down and remove the covers and then stick them through the washing machine (I did them on a 30 degree wash)

Cleaning it all properly would cost a lot less but take a lot longer..

There are no carpets in it and no covers on the very worn out seats.

Had to chuckle at this, almost like listening to the innocents :) The first Range Rovers came with vinyl interior so they could be hosed out, this was back in the days when form followed function in Land Rovers :)

You'll be surprised at how far you can go to clean the insides, as long as you aren't giving it licks with the jet into seams/joints and causing physical damage (kind of like the advice not to write your name in the driveway or patio with the powerwasher as you have to spend the rest of the day making it all spotless) or pouring water into the dashboard there is plenty of scope to get it smelling better, you can remove carpet/matting and unbolt seats and the like. These can be washed in the same way once removed.

It's not to everyones taste but dilute Jeyes Fluid might offer some relief from the existing smell, and it's cheap, there is a floral smelling antiseptic as well as 1001. Failing that, Febreze or Shake and Vac if you don;t want to get it wet. A bottle of aftershave (or perfume, whatever floats your boat) sprayed into the fabric can cover the smells as well.

I'd limit my attempts to only one of the above though, although warm soapy water will work with all. Not the best time of year to be doing this though, you probably won't notice any real benefits as long at is is damp and cold. Should have asked back in July you should :)

All of this getting rid of smells is speaking from experience of transporting a stray cat to a friend who took them in. Said cat seemed happy enough but suddenly became alarmed and preferred to shit itself while perched on seatback and looking through windscreen. Due to the fact that it's head was facing forward, the cat's arse was lined up perfectly with the tailgate window, at about the same level as the rear view mirror. Physics played a major part in deflecting the streak of shit of the glass and downwards into the plastic sheet on the boot loadspace floor so not all bad news then :) The aforementioned rear view mirror allowed me to see all this in what I now realise was Matrix bullet time. I'm just glad the cat was looking out of the front windscreen and not facing backwards at the time.

The cat got away from one of the several windows and sunroof that were promptly opened lest I fill the footwells as I resisted the gagging urge and steered the car to the side of the road. In hindsight I should have left the windows closed, got out and locked the doors and let the little bugger choke but I had visions of hundreds of little cat pawprints (mentally conjuring up a fairground candy floss machine here) on the inside of the glass as the cat run a wall of death around the interior.

"should have put it in a box" says Our Lass when I got home. "I'll put the little effer in a box now if I catch it". "I'll bet it was scared and hungry" "Judging by what it dumped in my car it's just eaten for England"

So, Jeyes fluid, powerwashers, warm soapy water and a bottle of sftershave returned things to normality. If anyone owns an ex company car blue Escort estate G566 ??? then you have my sympathies if the cats in your neighbourhood find it irresistable to spray.

I feel like that advert for Mint credit cards, brings back awful memories :)

You sure it's not a smell that's got into the headlining? My 90 was previously owned from new by an old farmer that obviously smoked like a trouper, it's taken removal and power washing of the headlining, power washing of the rear of the vehicle, a thorough clean inside and a year for the smell to go.

A weak solution of sodium bicarbonate [from your chemist] definitely kills the smell of cat piss [& many other smells too]. Might save you the worry/bother of blowing water everywhere [use a bucket & a cloth].
