Any ideas on what would make a 2002 OBW tachometer show just over 2k RPM all the time (unless engine is floored, when it will show 0 RPM)? The dealership replaced the tach last week, and the new one does the same thing. They suspect a bad ground somewhere. But if it were a bad ground, wouldn't it just work or not work, instead of showing the wrong indication? I personally suspect some kind of sending unit.
We found that after driving for quite a while, say more than half an hour (which in our area is quite a while), the tach will suddenly begin to work. This has happened twice this week. Once the car cools and is restarted, the tach jumps to 2k RPM just as the computer starts firing the spark plugs. (Obviously it can't jump to 2k RPM as fast as the guage is doing.)
Do Subaru tachometers have two, three or four leads on them? I'm used to Chrysler cars where the guages all plug directly into the Body Control Module like a pronged light bulb. Does the computer control the tach reading in a Subaru, or does it really get its info from a sending unit on the engine? If computer controlled, I would suspect a wiring issue between tach and computer, because the engine runs absolutely perfectly.
