'97 Legacy security system problem

Aug 10, 2003 2 Replies

The factory security system in my 1997 Legacy GT failed a few days ago.

Pressing the buttons on the remote will not arm the system nor will the keychain remote lock or unlock the doors.

I can use a key to unlock the driver's door and then use the "Lock / Unlock" rocker switch to open all doors (the GT is a Wagon).

I've changed the battery in the remote and checked both fuse blocks for a blown fuse.

I have not experienced any other strange electrical problems and the vehicle has not been damaged.

Before I head off to Super Rupair, the most-excellent independent Suburu repair shop in Boulder, Colo., does anyone have a suggestion that I might try?

You never realize how handy something like the remote lock/unlock feature is until you can't use it.

Cheers!

Try another remote (if you have one). Try re-programming your system to recognize your remote (perhaps it "forgot" your remote?)

Cheers,

P.S. If the problem turns out to be a dead remote, relatively cheap ones are plentiful on E-bay.

Thanks for the excellent advice!

I had forgotten that I received TWO remotes when my car was new. I dug out the spare remote and it works fine.

You're also right about eBay: I saw new remotes for $40/pair.

BTW, good > Try another remote (if you have one).
