The check engine light came on today in my 97 Subuaru (2.2L) engine and according to Autozone printout...
"Troublecode OBDII (Alpha) P Code
The PCM has determined that a malfunction exists in the electrical circuit for knock sensor 1. (Bank 1 or Single Sensor)( Bank 1 identifies the location of cylinder #1, While bank 2 identifies the cylinders on the opposite bank)."
The mechanic who moonlights in Auto Zone's parts dept says there may be a wire shorting out and that the sensors(s) can be found somewhere on the block. He described it as round and a couple inches in diameter (generic knock sensor, since he said he didn't much work on Soobies)
Where might I find this sensor, what does it look like and on which side, facing the engine from the front is cylinder #1?
If no loose wire externally, should I replace the part, or ignore the message (I hear no knocking)? (OF course then if something else triggers the light I won't know about it)
I'm really not a mechanic of any great inclination, but would appreciate at least the help to try and see if what the mechanic said might be the problem is the problem.
Also...can this code ever be triggered by something else?
