I found I am missing the lock bolt on the alternator on my '88 Subaru wagon. I don't want to buy a sack full of bolts to find the right size or drive back and forth to the supply with a loose alternator and risk throw and tangling belts, etc. Anybody have an idea of the size/thread?

Take the belt off. You can go forever on a full charge if you don't use any accessories.
Just go to just about any auto wrecking yard. This bolt is not unique. Almost every Japanese car you find will have one that'll work.
Just what I finally ended up doing. ( In driving rainstorm.) Got one off an Isuzu.
