97 OB > 5spd > at low rpm & throttle car surges > any ideas?

car has 100k miles and is new to me. say when i'm in a parking lot and in

2nd gear at light throttle (1000-1500 rpm) the tranny/engine exhibits surges/pulsates/backlash? it's sort of a jerky/rubber-band sensation that goes away when i give it gas. at a standstill when i rev the engine it's smooth at all rpms. this sensation seems to be coming from tranny. engine had 90k service so it's tuned. any ideas? mounts gone bad? cv joints worn? tranny worn? thanks, bill

It's the nature of the beast. Play with your clutch technique and you can minimize it. My '99 Outback has done it since new if I'm not gentle with the clutch and heavy with the gas.
