Can the EJ22 engine (2.2L Legacy Engine) swap directly into a 97 Outback that previously had the EJ25 (2.5L Outback engine).
I can't give you an authoritative answer, but I suspect not. The 2.5l engine has camshaft sensors that might not match signals from the 2.2l
I've been told only the 95 2.2 interchanges. Seems the 95 engine has the dual port exhaust heads and something about an EGR port.
It will physically fit, but there will be significant differences in the wiring, emissions, and (I think) exhaust port configuration. You'll probably want a "donor" car to facilitate the conversion. You can probably find more than you ever wanted to know about this on the usmb list , I'd start there.
