H and L marks on dipstick of Subaru Forester 2.0XT

Don't know the case of the forester, but almost every car out there needs 1 quart when exactly on the L mark.

I wish my Audi A4 were so precise; it seems to require about 3/4 a quart, so I have to carefully ration out the oil and can't just dump a neat tidy quart in.

Will an extra 8 ounces of oil do damage?

I'm not about to find out by defying the owner's manual. ;) The manual specifically says not to overfill the oil reservoir, so I don't.

On my WRX it just needed about 1/2 quart to do that. I suggest starting at a small amount and checking it frequently. BTW, that notch on the dipstick just above the high mark is for hot filled readings.

Since most oil containers today (in the US, at least) are marked in 1/4 qt increments, I keep an empty around for this kind of "problem." Open a new bottle, pour 1/4 qt into the empty one, dump the rest in the engine... personally, I think any engineer who designs an engine that doesn't use a "conventional" measuring system, like 1 qt or 1 litre between marks is guilty of doing a poor job, but there are lots of 'em out there, so it's not that hard to work around 'em.
