lifter noise

While I'm on a roll posting here, I'll ask one more question:

My 2003 Impreza Outback ticks quite a bit. It's always been a little noisy to me, but several people have mentioned it to me lately so I figure it might be getting worse and I'm just not noticing.

What is the consequence of "do nothing?"

Thanks, Chicobiker

Nothing. Noise is very common and usually means not much.

Hi,

"More noise"

Noisy lifters have been a continuing topic ever since Subies started coming w/ hydraulics. Lots of "cures" have been suggested, ranging from running cleaning fluids (Marvel Mystery Oil, Rislone and similar) to making sure you've got a "proper" oil filter installed (OEM is most preferred, some of the other "better" to "premium" models also perform well--don't ask me why, but my Subie's the only car I've ever had that's so temperamental about oil filters!) to actual mechanical ministrations such as taking the lifters out and cleaning them and/or replacing O-rings on the oil pump.

If it were my car and bothering me, I'd start simple, w/ the oil filter, and work up.

But if you do nothing, it'll just tick along happily and drive your passengers nuts.
