I have looked at and at some comments here. I havenarrowed my choice (for replacing my Firestone Wilderness OEM tires -at 43,000 miles due to edge ware) to the following:Top recommendation so far are for Goodyear tripletread ($118.00locally, plus $10.99 mounting at NTB - MSRP of $142.50). These onlyhave a "B" rating for heat and have a lower speed rating than the OEMtires (H is the OEM rating). All other factors are excellent.Another finalist is the Kumho ECSTA HP4 716, which is a 225/60HR16("H") rating as was my OEM's. There are in stock locally at $74.99plus 10.99 mount and balance. Sears is $10.00 cheaper per tire, butnot in stock locally AND Tirerack has them backordered ($59.99there!). These are reated one step lower than the Goodyear, but arestill excellent (at tirerack rating comments).I had also considered Kumho ECSTA ASX (can't find locally) andSumitomo HTR+ (same thing). All but the HP4 716 are available attirerack - (any comments about dealing with them?).Any experience with these or any other recommendations? I live in PAand get snow, bad at times.Thanks.Warren

Take a little trip to Canada and pick up some Motomaster Touring 160s at Canadian Tire. Great tire for a price that can't be beat. Anything is better than the Wilderness which were a poor tire choice for the Outback to begin with! them out

I like my Kumho 716 HP4s very much at ~10,000 miles. Excellent dry and especially wet monsoon rains here in SW FL. Sears cost ~ 360 out the door. I had some TT tires and found the sidewalls flex excessively which translates into mediocre cornering. My Subaru came with H rated tires and it's illegal to put a lower rated tire on my vehicle regardless of how fast I drive. H rated tires are basically a safer tire due to handling characteristics in addition to the speed rating.

Opinions about the "best" replacement tires for a 2000 Outback SW?

Assuming you're getting say 28mpg now and a change to TT reduces that to 27. At 35K per year that's an extra 46.29 gallons over a year. If you're finetuning your costs to 2 tanks of gas over a year you must be on very tight margins.

I ahve a 2004 Forester, I junked the Yokahamas after 17000km and went to tripletreads. In my opinion the best all round tire I have driven. As for Gas mileage, I track my mileage regularly and see 7.8 - 9.0l/100k (32mpg Imperial gallon). No difference in mileage from the Yokahmas, maybe slighty better mileage actually.
