There are reports that Apple's white devices made white a more popular colour choice for car buyers.

There is also this report, from the Apple vs. Samsung legal battles, that Steve Jobs did indeed want to make a car.

I have no problem with them branching into design and compete with Porsche Design :) mass producing a car on another hand is another world altogether, even at no cost objection engineering and lotus design services on tap as I'm sure certain silly cone valley enterpreneurs can attest now

now that isteve is gone I don't think the cupertino has the will to move its butt and divert so radically from its core business

frankly it would have been better for them to jettison the desktop division that add design business unit to the mix

Apple don't actually manufacture any hardware themselves. Apple does all the design work for their products, but the manufacturing process is done by other companies under contract and often with Apple adding extra financial help to improve the factories (e.g. Samsung currently makes the iOS chips, someone else makes the display screens, Foxconn and someone else does the assembly, etc.).

The reports I've read so far about Apple moving some manufacturing back to America have said nothing about actually Apple building their own manufacturing plants. There is a rumour that Foxconn is looking at having an American factory though.

right, aside from amd and intel who else in the silly valley is making the chips they engineer

most companies don't have enough capital to enter and sustain the chip making business

i guess the same goes for automotive business these days

IBM has some real nice CMOS/SiGe/bipolar processes fabbed in Burlington, Vt. among other places. I've used them on 10-12.5 Gbps datacomm devices.
