The mechanics are narrow specialists. You go to the one that fits the best the job you have at hand. Barring frame truing you don't have to ever see the dealer.
Unless you are like myself live in a f***ed up automotive land where to retain warranty on OEM parts you have to have them installed by the dealer. Sigh.
It's odd that by your age you have not developed relationship with a few shops automotive and know where to go for each routine task.
In the states you don't have to go the dealer to maintain warranty for a new car. Enjoy the reduced expenses.
Tell me you are kidding. If you are not and mechanics indeed are lugging a few hundred pounds of tools to and from work each day then we know where all the oil goes :^)
I'd love to see how they unload those tool chests from their trucks daily.
If the mechanic takes his tools home every night it's a pretty "sketchy" shop - and not much of a mechanic..
Tool theft IS a serious problem - but likely easier to steel them from the mechanic's car than a locked shop
Some do, but not many. Some repair centres also have "Mobile mechanices" who can come to your house / workplace to do repairs and maintenance, so they would have tools always in the van.
I wonder how often something goes wrong and the newly immobile car is waiting for an unexpected part is left sitting in a parking lot.
No idea. I know the dealer workshop I take my car to has a mobile service, but I've never used it. Mind you, my car has been left sitting at their workshop (until the next day) waiting for a part, and in one case I had to wait a few days for a minor part to arrive from Japan (the car sat in may garagae though and was technially still driveable).
