I think you might have bad information on that title. When you bought the property you acquired all the contents including abandoned property left there. Your friends only problem is getting the paper to prove it. In my state you would just apply for a new title to the secretary of state. I'm not an attorney, but I sure would check further.

I didn't think the answer of "give it to the police to auction off" passed my common sense test either, but who says the polititian who make the rules used common sense, especially if one of the answers allows them to gain financially. I agree if the car was abandoned on the roadside (state property), then they can dispose of it after posting notice for some period of time. My buddy just needs to look into this some more.

Based on what I've found so far and the comments collected here, I don't think it makes much difference as the thing has very little value as it is ($200 maybe). The clock says 42K miles, but it was registered up through 1994, so no way of knowing or even guessing how many miles it was driven between 1976 and

Smart thing might be to junk it, but even that will take some creativity with no title. Applying for the title is minor enough though. Where I live they just leave them on the street for the police to dispose of, which your guy sort of suggested.
