1984 Pontiac Fiero (manual tranny) is dying when coming to stops

Hello,

I have a 84' fiero with a stalling problem. It has a 4 cyl. iron duke and 5 speed transmission out of an 85'. here's the problem: when i am approaching a stop i take press the clutch in to take it out of gear and as soon as i do, the rpm's bottom out at about 500 and sometimes the car will recover, but recently its been stalling. what makes it even wierder is that when i try to start it again, the engine will fire a couple times then quickley die, it will repededly do this until you give it some gas right after you turn the key to keep it going. Normally it idles semi-normal with some eratic idling, but it'll never go under like 900 rpms.

Sounds like many things, but it could be the IAC failing. Also, the passages in the throttle body and intake manifold get blocked with carbon and oil residue so a disassembly and good cleaning would probably help.

When it won't start, check for spark while cranking. Do you have access to a fuel pressure guage?
