Per an automotive radio program, one cause could be poor ground electrical continuity. Over time the ground pathway from the transmission case to the engine block may deteriorate (from corrosion), resulting in the electrically operated solenoid not functioning properly. One solution was to install a direct ground wire from the transmission housing to the vehicle frame.

Let's take that a step further, and ask ourselves how many batteries are grounded to the frame? Perhaps ground the transmission back to the negative post on the battery. Seems reasonable and bypass goofy connections twixt the body/frame/engine.
