Caravan Question

Hello All:

Vehicle is a 2000 Caravan, short wheel base with a 3.0L 3 speed. Mileage is

120K.

I went to do an oil change yesterday and noticed that the oil pan was somewhat rusty in spots. I gently scraped at one of the rougher looking bits to see how bad things were only to have oil gush out. I was able to patch the hole with epoxy after draining the oil, but I don't expect that there is much life left in the pan. My question is: How difficult is it to replace the pan? I have consulted the Haynes manual and understand that the exhaust pipe has to be disconnected and the engine mounts undone. I have tackled bigger jobs, but I know there are probably pitfalls that are not yet obvious. Can anyone comment?

Thanks! Kevin

Hmmm, Sorry to hear that. If pan is so rusty, other parts may be rusty as well. How can you remove bolts/nuts to do the job? Whole car may crumble, hi. Lots of liquid wrench/penetrating oil..... GL, 73, Tony, VE6CGX

Tony:

The van is a 2000 and otherwise in pretty good shape. The pan, it seems to me is very vulnerable to damage from road debris and could have used a bit of tlc (or maybe be made from Al.) No doubt, the fasteners in the exaust system won't be reusable.

I read somewhere that a rusting oil pan is a common problem with the 3.0 Mitsubishi-built engine. You may want to check with the dealer and see if they will help with it.
