I think what we need is a bottom up fully assembled diagram with transmission pan and filter off, if there is such a diagram somewhere.

To clarify things a bit maybe here are a couple of photos.

Anyone know where this spring goes?

Could that be a 1998 trans or a 1988 or 1898 as posted? How much of the trans have you had apart? That would help ID how far in to look in the diagrams. I may have a manual with a diagram with a bit more detail. The spring actualy looks like the parking pawl spring which would require a little bit of disassembly to install. I can't think of another rat trap spring in there offhand. If that is it, it is used to engage the parking pawl when the longitudinal rod that engages the pawl is moved to the "park" position. Check to be sure you have the parking pawl spring installed. If not, you may have to remove the tailshaft housing to install it as the pawl pin is retained by the housing and it goes aroung that pin. Also, it there is no spring on that parking pawl, don't even think about maybe taking a chance - you won't have a park lock and it may engage inadvertently at other times. Post back here and someone will try to give you a hand if needed.

OOPS, darn, but it is a 1989 (eighty nine)... sorry.

How far apart has the trans been? Has the valve body been out or the trans overhauled where the internals would have been removed? Where or how was the spring Found? I found my ATSG manual. There is another rat trap spring in some of those transmissions that appears to go between the center support housing and the case inside the transmission. If the internals have been out, it may not have been noticed when it was disassembled. It may be this spring and would be called an anti-clunk spring if that is the one. The trans will be quite noisy with a big thunk when engaging if it is one that should have the spring and is missing. The manual does not give a very good picture of how it is installed. There may only be one way it will install it that is it. It has been quite some time since I had one of those down. If you have a NAPA store near you, they can get and many stock the ATSG transmission manual for your vehicle which has pretty much everything you need to service or overhaul one of those. They should sell for about $15 or so. You can also get them online from a lot of places including NAPA. Autozone or Advance may also have them.

Thanks Lugnut for the posts and info. I don't think the internals have been removed at any time. Basically he took the trans out of the vehicle, removed the pan and removed the torque converter. I think I'll go get the manual tomorrow along with the flange nuts he needs. Thanks so much.
