Actually, On-Star equipped cars have a secret microphone in a sense, the system can be used to listen in on the occupants of the vehicle without their knowledge or consent. (Of course after the FBI did just that, the ninth circuit ruled that they're not allowed - I'm sure that'll stop 'em, right?)
Sounds like this nonsense is yet another reason to stick with the older models.
No On-Star, black box, or GPS in my old Hornet, thankful to say. Bad enough it has the feds' ugly battering-ram bumpers.

The company I worked for before I retired required them on company cars, or on cars for which the company payed a mileage benefit.
It is not new at all.
The government was working on a system by which your car could be disabled by a signal from a police car. OnStar and LoJack, I guess, have a similar concept, but the "master plan" was to have this built into the ECM from the factory so that nobody could slip the leash. I have not heard anything new on this for a while, and can only assume that when the news came out, the government backed up, or that it is still in the works but more silently.

Even if they aren't doing it yet, they will eventually, and even if doesn't have a mic that doesn't matter. No matter what kind of information it records, it would be something that could be used against you. So they would be requiring people to record their own actions and it could be used in court. Sounds like a violation of the 5th.
