fuel pump for f-150

Have 2001 f-150 that needs fuel pump. Dealer says motorcraft pump $444.00 + labor total $662.00. Dealer says use only motorcraft pump otherwise many problems. Called "Tuffy auto service center" they gave me a price about $200.00 cheaper. they said they would put in Delphi fuel pump, said it is equal to motorcraft fuel pump. I plan to keep truck so want a good fuel pump.......what to do????????

$148.00 bucks from RockAuto.com

DELPHI Part # FE0298 And that is the factory pump. Ford sourced it from Delphi.

Of course ford is going to tell you to put a ford product in it.. Aftermarket fuel pumps are fine. We sell them all day long and don't have problems. We sell Carter brand.

........

I just looked up the labor rate for the fuel pump replacement and worst case it says 2.4 hours to replace an in tank pump. So, they are charging around $300hr labor to install it???? Go somewhere else. It sounds like they are screwing you.

Talked to dealer again to make sure pump arrived ok (had store deliver to them) ...they told me this delphi fuel pump was motor only...and not the whole pump assembly....so they will have to re-use old assembly....he is saying could be problem with old assembly unit as well...will know more tomorrow....additional $34.50 .........

If you're not having a problem with your float assembly (gas gauge) just replacing the pump only will be fine. Make sure they got the strainer for the pump as well.

About a year ago I replaced the electric fuel pump in my '93 Dakota. The pump is in the tank, btw. I ordered the straps that I needed through the dealer. The parts man also tried to add a couple of 3/8" bolts that hold the straps to the frame......without my permission. He wanted to charge me $17.50 each (X2), for a common grade 5 bolt that a hardware store sells for about a dollar a pound. That's were I drew the line and told him that he could keep the bolts. BTW, I purchased my replacement pump from NAPA and it was an identical pump, right down to the "Made by Carter" logo on the pump. I didn't even price it from the dealer. I'm sure they would have tried to rape me on that part too.
