A quick Google of Jacksonville indicates that although it isn't the biggest city in the world, it *does* have a goodly number of actual automobile dealers and independent repair shops. In that case, I must wonder what it is about this particular shop that is so appealing to you that you would keep going back to a glorified tire store with entry level techs to get your vehicle(s) serviced. I'm not excusing their incompetence, but am really really questioning your judgement....first in allowing any Goodyear store to work on anything serious, but most in repeating the error in judgement by going back.

I understand what you're saying Lon, and I wonder too why you'd go back after they screwed something up once, but I do think for the majority of people who know absolutely nothing about cars, the lure of a name they "trust" can be strong. Look at all the people who used to take their cars to Sears for repair, even though by many accounts they had about the worst service people in the industry. The trouble is for the uninitiated, it can be damned hard to find a competent mechanic. Word of mouth is the best approach as they say, but for many these things take them by surprise & they just have to pick someplace quick, so they go where the guy behind the counter was "friendly" when they got new tires. And often the only word of mouth people hear is from friends who also have horror stories, stories not limited to tire places and the like but which often include dealerships, independents, etc. Too bad.

It's more then that. I'm originally from Minneapolis MN. Goodyear has a great reputation there and I never had problems with them before. Trust me, I will not be going back to them again.

A valid point.

Lets see. Precision tune charged me to replace my sepentine belt but all they did was clean it and put it back on (I marked it with a scratch prior to service). Chevy At The Avanues (dealer) replaced a weather strip seal on my Tahoe but never tested it... first rain filled the back of the truck.

Goodyear is only one mile from my place and this shop was less then one year old but you are right, I should have learned from my mistake. I WILL NOT be going back. In fact, I'm having yet another shop check the brakes now.

On this topic... I have no idea how to choose a service shop (name recognition does give a person the feeling of safety). Are there clues I should be looking for. What should I be asking (almost ALL shops have this ASE certified crap on their walls).

I'm a computer programmer not a mechanic. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Ask friends. The more they know about cars, the better. Shops are like doctors - you will hear complaints about all of them. Choose one with mostly accolades.

You might want to check for a newsgroup local to your area and get recommendations that way.

The last time I took my car to a Goodyear shop ... they lost my car.
