Help! 1998 Chevy S-10 Manual Tranny question

Hi,

I am looking at purchasing a 1998 Chevy S-10 pickup. It has about

55,000 miles. I know the owner of the truck. The truck has a manual transmission. The truck has been losing a good amount of transmission fluid, pretty much on a daily basis. The owner has been using brake fluid rather than the recommended fluid. I plan on getting the leak fixed, but I am concerned about what the brake fluid might have been doing to the tranny. What is everyones thoughts? Also, does anyone have any idea what might be leaking. The transmission has never been serviced. Am I opening myself up for a lot of headaches? Thanks in advance for your help! Lee

Is it losing hydraulic clutch fluid or actual gear oil? If the former, DOT3 is just fine. If he's been dumping brake fluid to replace leaking gear oil, DO NOT BUY THE TRUCK.

Oops... sorry... clutch fluid....

In that case, it shouldn't be a problem, although with that much of a leak I'm suprised the clutch even works properly.
