help removing oil filter from 1996 chevy full size 4x4

I have a 96 chevy 350 1500 4x4. The oil filter is almost impossible to get to. To make a long story short. the filter is a crumpled up mess. I took the housing that fiton on the block off and still cant get the reminents of the folter off. I have tried using a screwdriver and hammer to turn the old filter, did not work. Any ideas?

Also, this truck has two wcrew in lines to this housing that go to a factory oil cooler. Anyone know if these lines have seals in them? I appreciate your help!

Can I install the verticle oil filter adaptor into my 4x4 truck without any problem and just bypass the oil cooler entirely?

I have no idea.. I guess anything is possible. Why would you want to bypass the oil cooler? Cool oil is happy oil. :)

********** I think you said you removed the adaptor (which allows flow through the cooler), and if so you should have the adaptor and old smashed filter body out of the engine compartment?

If I read this correctly, you now have it in a place that you can chuck it up in a vise and nibble away most of the filter body. You should be able to get it down to a level where you can get it all off.

Or if you dont have the tools, or dont want to risk it, take it to a decent machine shop and have them remove the corpse.

I've never seen a filter I couldnt remove by driving a screwdriver through the filter body and twisting counterclockwise, but I dont doubt that you may have one.

If I have misinterpreted what you wrote, apologies.
