KD double flare tool??

Question

(omit tale of woe)I have a rear brake line that's decayed under one of the clamps.  It'sa single line all the way from the master cyclinder to the rear axle,so I thought I'd try to splice a piece in.  To do that, I went andbought a KD double flaring kit, from a NAPA store.  But, even on apiece of new tubing, I can't keep the line from slipping in the clampwhen I try to form the first fold.  I followed the directions,chamfered the corner, etc.  It just slips.  If anyone has suggestions on what I might do differently, I wouldappreciate hearing them.  Is it possible that 3/16" brake line is justmore than this tool can do?TIA,George

I have the same tool you're talking about and I have no problems with it. However, I do find that for brake tubing the only way to get it securely clamped is to use pliers on the wing nuts - I don't have the finger strength to really clamp down on the line.

*laugh*  The KD is the old I have... I would tighten the wing nuts withchannel locks well until I broke a wing nut and then broke both the pins that hold the bolts to the short section. I've replaced both pins with screws and both wing nuts with real nuts. I've also flared 3/8th's line with this thing which is what it got busted up on. anyway it always worked fine on regular size brake line.I've got craftsman one around somewhere too that works well for as little as I've used it. For on the car use I've mixed and matched between the twoto get into a tight space.

Thanks to all who replied. No, the tubing is not S/S. AFAIK, it's not metric: I bought it as 3/16", and it measures .186 OD. I do tighten the clamp in the recommended sequence.

I notice that, when clamped, the tubing is not square to the clamp body. The discrepancy is only about 2 deg, though, so probably not enough to be a problem. It does seem like a lot for a 'tool'.

I remain confused. It is reassuring that others have not had a problem.
