remote starter

Make sure the batteries are correctly working on the remote starter key.

I have a remote starter on my 2001 caravan - it has about 25K Km on it. I found today, I turned the key it starts first time. When I use the remote starter, it tried 3 times & didn't go. I tried it later and it started after several tries.

It used to start first time using the remote. Any ideas if I am heading for trouble here? I use the thing all the time in the winter.

TIA.

Do you know if your remote starter uses the tach or voltage to detect that the vehicle has started? If it uses voltage, it may be that your battery or starter is starting to go bad, although I'm not quite sure how that would affect the remote starters operation. I know that my remote starter typically has to try more than once on a cold start (I know my battery will need replacement before weather turns cold again). I've been meaning to hook it up to my tach.

Sound like time for a tune-up.

After 25K KM? What's to tune aside from plugs? And I thought they were good for more than that? And why does it start first time up with the key if that is the case?

Just wondering......

TIA.

There's something amiss in the remote starter system. A flaky hood safety switch (if equipped) would be my starting point. With the hood up, this switch cuts out the remote starter. On my Ford e-150, it's nothing more than a steel ball inside a small cylinder and you can actually hear it hit either end in the cylinder.

Or - you have a bad wire connection. On some of the wires (namely tach input) the remote starter's wire taps into it, it's not spliced in place of it. If it's an aftermarket job it could be that the tap into that wire has become corroded over time because the installer didn't bother to take an extra 60 seconds to seal it with silicone glue.

When you say "the remote starter won't start it" does it even try? Do you hear clicking or something (vent fan turning on as if the key was turned to "on", idiot lights turning on, etc) If not, check the power connections to the remote starter controller.

Well - an update. I had the van in for servicing 2 weeks ago and they replaced a door window motor and while they were at it, they reflashed the computer that handles the body electrics. Guess what!? There is a known probem with after market starters because "Crysler bus does not support it" whatever that means.

Apparently there is some sort of fix invoving a resistor or something to adjust the bus voltage driving the remote circuitry. It was fine before.

Now - why did they not tell me that at the dealership when I was there and they had my remote starter and everything right in their hands? Apparently it is a known problem when a 2001 Caravan is updated - they have about a dozen like that. Duh.......

I am going in on Monday to get the guy to fix it up - we'll see.
