RETRY: Hope you've traded in your clunker

Your vehicle must be less than 25 years old on the trade-in date.

Only purchase or lease of new vehicles qualify.

Generally, trade-in vehicles must get 18 or less MPG (some very large pick-up trucks and cargo vans have different requirements).

Trade-in vehicles must be registered and insured continuously for the full year preceding the trade-in.

You don't need a voucher, dealers will apply a credit at purchase. Program runs through Nov 1, 2009 or when the funds are exhausted, whichever comes first.

The program requires the scrapping of your eligible trade-in vehicle, and that the dealer disclose to you an estimate of the scrap value of your trade-in. The scrap value, however minimal, will be in addition to the rebate, and not in place of the rebate.

About seven something years ago, a guy and his family used to live in the house across the street from me.He drove a Pepsi Cola tractor trailer rig.One day I looked over there and there was a 1969 Cadillac car sitting in his driveway.About a week or so later, there was another Cadillac about the same age as the 1969 Cadillac sitting over there, two old Cadillacs.I Applaud the guy for collecting those old cars. cuhulin

The only car that might come close is the Supra, and I doubt that's happening. Esp since I just spent half the day putting in new ball joints...

Those were kinda cool cars, and that engine is hard to kill. Toyota licensed them for the FJ40 LandCruiser (jeep style) and used them for a long time.

You aren't in Mass, are you? I saw a root beer colored one a couple weeks ago.

That ain't happening!

I paid $600 for it, and the value has been rising steadily ever since.

1985 AMC Eagle 4-wheel-drive wagon. Six-cylinder (258 cid), 3-speed automatic. Essentially a Jeep drivetrain in a car body, and AMC's last gasp before being bought out by Chrysler. The EPA combined mileage estimate on this model is 16 mpg.

I rescued this car from the crusher a few years ago. (Someone had junked it even though it was basically solid, just needed some TLC). I sure as hell am not going to turn it in to be destroyed in favor of some plastic-and-tin roller skate just to please a bunch of feckless bureacrats, no matter how much "incentive" they may offer.

No, but it would not surprise me to find some Eagles still running up in New England. That was one of their prime market areas. Eagles and the early Subaru 4WD wagons were like gold in snowy areas.

Snowy areas,,,, An old ''Trick'' I once read about in Popular Science magazine (Auto Tips and Kinks) back in the 1950s or 1960s is to make a U shaped thingy out of pipe with a garden hose connection at one end and a cross pipe halfway between the U shaped pipe thingy, one side to the other side and drill some holes in the pipe.Turn on the water and slowly drive your car back and forth over the U shaped pipe thingy.Good for rinsing off the salt under there too.If you connect the hose to your hot water heater, I guess that would work even better.Nothing like old ''Tricks'' cuhulin

And if it helps, you can all think of it in Palin's terms: On the campaign trail she'd say "We'll *work with* these homeowners..." (sounds much better than "We'll *help* these homeowners..." , even it if is the same thing).

I see the clunker fiasco a waste of taxpayers dollars. Look at all the perfectly good vehicles they are destroying. Wasteful, totally wasteful.

I see you are still scared of Sarah Palin. She's not the gov of AK anymore and she's not running for anything, so why you so scared of her? I'm much more worried about the socialist obama and the socialist dim party and how they have set out to destroy the U.S. You should be too.

anymore and she's not running for anything, so why you so scared

I'd ask you why you think I'm scared of her, but I know you wouldn't give an answer (and I even know WHY you wouldn't).

And, hey, I'm just giving you another way to characterize the situation that may make it less upsetting for you (the Palin way, in this case).

You're welcome! :)

How should I know why you're scared of her, but you are. Still attacking her, that's enough for me. You might be worried that she's right and you're wrong.

When it comes to Palin, I am not worried about that at all.

You shouldn't, because there's no reason to be.

It could be that I find her interesting, and that's why I'm so interested in her and what she says and does.

OR

It could be that I find her scary, and that's why I'm so interested in her and what she says and does.

Which seems more likely?

Come on, dbu. You and I have both seen hundreds of interviews of politicians. Can you honestly tell me that Sarah Palin is not far and above the most fun to watch in these interviews?

Same with speeches. Usual political speech? Boooring!. Palin speech? Funny, fascinating, confusing....
