Specification mentioning HP and BHP

Hi,

I have seen several advertisements of the lightweight two wheelers saying its engine has Horsepower of 1.5 HP. Some times it is also mentioned that the Brake Horse Power of vehicle is 6.5.

What power is mentioned here as 1.5 HP, and how come any power be so less then BHP while BHP is measured after a lot of losses.

Any Links will help,

You don't say where you are, or where the two wheelers come from, but RAC horsepower has been widely used throughout the British Commonwealth for tax purposes at least until relatively recent times. For example Australian Holdens still show the RAC rating in the owner's handbook.

IIRC the NACC rating (once used in the US) is the same formula. You'll probably find plenty of references in google.

In the early part of the twentieth century the formula gave similar results to Prony Brake measurements.
