Timing Marks on 1992 Mazda 2.2

I should have paid more attention but changed the water pump on wifes 1992 Mazda MX6 with 2.2 liter motor (no turbo) so had timing belt off. It now starts but barely runs (maybe 500 rpm and throttle position doesn't make much difference). May even have a slight knock (how many teeth can you be off before the pistons hit the valves?)

  • I see an arrow on the valve cover but should it align with the arrow for #1 or with the little circle stamped into the cam sprocket (these are about
3-4 teeth apart)? I was off 1 tooth aligning the circle to pointer at the cam with the crank key pointing straight up so I moved 1 tooth. Now it doesn't start at all.

  • On the crank sprocket, I also see a little circle stampped right at the key but don't see a clear mark. Should the key be straight up?

I didn't think about it until on the way to work but I assume I can put the accessory belt pulley/damper back on and align to TDC with the timing marks. I assume the cam should then align with the pointer for #1 that is stamped in the cam sproket.

I may have moved the cam sprocked as I used it to pry against and move the timing belt spring tensioner back but is shouldn't have moved more than a tooth or so. Cannot find anything else I may have pulled loose though (connectors, hoses, etc.) It ran fine before I started.

Any help appreciated. Either reply here or to
