Took me a whole day, but solved it!

Some while back I was doing a favor for a lady whose engine would always die when the car came to a stop. Sure enough, everytime you came to a complete stop the engine would shut down. Spent hours lookint at fuel solenoids, oil pressure cut-out switches etc.

FINALLY, I realized that her carburator was not bolted down properly, and, with a large forward weighted air cleaner, everytime you slowed down to a stop the assembly would tip forward, suck in air at the base, and die. Needless to say that after the stop the carburator would resettle on its base and everything would be O.K.

Turns out her teenage kid was playing with the carb and forgot to fully bolt it back down.

LESSON LEARNED, look for the obvious first. I'm embarassed that it took me so long to find the problem

Man, that is a good lesson to learn...and relearn...and relearn.. So many times the focus of troubleshooting gets shifted to the complicated when the real problem is hiding in plain sight.

"Teenager" definition is a walking accident looking for a place to happen.

You should use the kid's noggin to loosen and re tighten the carb bolts. Then he will remember.

I bet that loose carburetors are statistically insignificant, today

I bet that old lady wishes she, her mother, and her grandmother hadn't bred with their brothers. I'm surprised that kid had the skills needed to visually locate the car and open it's hood.

Oh, come on now!

Don't tell me you never fiddled with a carburetor back in your pimple-faced youth, and maybe took several tries to get it back to square one. I personally screwed up several carbs before I got the hang of it. Part of the learning experience. Rex in Fort Worth
