What order to bleed brakes ?

I understand that you need to bleed your brakes in a particular order.

But what if you only need to bleed one or two of your brakes? Is it okay, then, to just bleed those two, or must you bleed all four?

Also, what is the reason behind bleeding the brakes in a particular order?

Bleed the one furthest away from the master cylinder first - longest line, then the next furthest etc. The reason you bleed all four is to make sure that you get new fluid down the lines - you should almost never just "bleed" one brake, brake fluid absorbs water, lowering the boiling point, and eventually causing brake failure when you need it the most. Flush your brake system if you're going to the trouble of bleeding it, extra ten minutes for saving our car.

The particular order thing is because you mix some of the fluid in your master cylinder, and the longest is the one with the most water
