2006 Toyota avalon

Has anyone had problems with the battery on there '06 Avalons. My mother bought a new '06 in June and has had it towed to the shop three times because of a dead battery. Each time the battery has been dead and has had to be replaced. The reasons for the dead battery given has been that the key fob is too close to the car and it's continuously communicating with the brain in the car, therefor draining the battery. The car is parked in a garage. The fob is about 15 feet from the car on a inside wall in the house. The second reason she was given was the car was to low on gas. The third reason was she had let the car set too long, 3 weeks. This car has only 7,275 miles on the odometer. I just found out about all the run around she has been giving this evening. I plan going to the dealer Tuesday morning when I get back to town. The dealer told her not to worry we will come pick you up each time the car doesn't start, after all you have a phone. The second time the car wouldn't start she had went into a store for less than 10 minutes. When she questioned the manager all he could say was that you have a cell phone, but to me that is not the point. Does this car have a serious problem My mother is 70 years old and she has bough a new car every 2 years since 1970. She has never had any porblems like this with any car she has ever ownned. This is the first Toyoda and if satisfaction is not met Tuesday it will probably be the last.

thanks for anu help, glide

The easiest way to check the dealer's diagnosis is to move the key fob farther away from the car and see if the battery drain goes away, although I doubt if that is the problem. Most state lemon laws cover defects that affect the use, value, or safety of the vehicle, and I think it is reasonable to say that a car that does not start is not very useful. The dealer should be checking for a parasitic draw as well as checking alternator output.

I would ask the dealer to contact the technical hot line while politely mentioning that the vehicle has been X times for the same repair without a satisfactory long-term solution. If they give you the same story, call Toyota's customer relations line at 1-800-331-4331 or take it to another dealership if that is not too inconvenient.
