95 Avalon overheating problem.

Cooling fan doesn't seem to be coming on and engine is overheating in traffic. When Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) switch #1 is disconnected, the fans come on. It seems I need a new ECT #1. Anything wrong with my analysis? Toyota wants nearly $100 for this switch which is unbelievable. Any other reputable sources for this part at a more reasonable price? Thanks.

Per the Toyota Repair Manual (p. EG201):

No. 1 EGT switch is open at temps above 208F (98c) and closed below

190F(88c)

There is a specific temperature at which the switch should open or close, which Tom418 was kind enough to provide.

Rather than just unplugging the switch, check continuity with the engine warmed up and cold. You should have continuity when the coolant is cold and open circuit when the coolant is hot.
