98 4runner rear seal

New to this group-- with a question. My wife's 98 4runner rear axle started leaking on the passenger side yesterday. I usually do my own maintenance and wonder if anyone can tell me how hard a job it is to pull the axle and install a new seal and bearing if needed? Also noticed a lot of pressure in the rear end when I opened the filler plug to check fluid level. Is that normal? Thanks ----

If the seal isn't leaking alot, you may be able to get away with just removing the axle and replacing the seal. It's something you can probably do with a basic set of hand tools, but you'll also need something to drive the new axle seal into the housing. If the seal is leaking enough to where the shoes are soaked, you will need to replace those, and if it's gotten to that point you can bet alot of the grease has been washed out of the bearing, so you will have trouble with that in the future.
