ATF...in a Manual tranny?!?!?

formatting link
Yup...ATF. That;s what was in there.

Not knowing I *didn't* have to drain the tranny, I did anyway...and what came out was red! The guy at Autozone said according to his Specs page, it may have ATF in it.

FINALLY got done and went for a test drive...things went easier today, but it still took FIVE MORE HOURS!!!

Runs good. I was going to ask about a funny WUB~WUB type noise when decelerating, but later saw somewhere that a worn CV joint will cause this, and sure enough...

Actually, wasn't too bad. I suppose for a first time, it did take a while, but if I have to do it again, I'll kinow what I'm doing!

(by taking it to a mechanic!!!!!)

ATF is not that uncommon in manual transmissions. Toyota has been using it for a while. It is less viscous than conventional gear oil so there is less drag, resulting in higher fuel economy.

Read that as "We only have to stock one type of transmission oil, our costs are less now!" or "The heck with the life of the gears, saving money is what it's all about." or "Plastic gears go well with red oil."

Actually, using ATF makes sense. It's all-weather, cold or heat don't bother it, it's light, and it seems to work just fine in Automatic trannies...

I think you will find that gear life in transmissions that use ATF is not any shorter than those that use gear oil, and the reduced drag is just one of many tricks to improve fuel economy and shift feel.

hmmmmm...Maybe I should drain the 90w gear lube out of the differential on my 2000 Merc and replace it with ATF...

AHA! You said Differential! Did you *mean* differential, or transmission?

There is a difference.
