Got a 1999 4Runner with 176,000 miles on it. Sometimes, when I turn the ignition key the starter (original equipment) hesitates or doesn't crank the engine at all. A second or third try does the trick though and so far I haven't been stranded but this behavior is happening more frequently. The battery is relatively new, about 2 years into a six year guarantee deal.
My novice thinking leads me to believe the starter may be going.
What do others think? Is this a reasonable service life for a starter? How much does a replacement starter typically cost?
Any thoughts on the subject greatly appreciated.
