I do mine about yearly! They really are grimy after a year. If your windows fog up a bit, you are due! (with ac on)
Speaking of cabin air filters, does my 98 Camry CE have one? I've heard different things from different people about that. If so, how do I get to it? Thanks, Andy
Refer to your operators manual.

Look behind the glove box...
That's HIGHLY INFLAMMATORY and PROVOCATIVE SUGGESTION!!!
Get on a newsgroup and ask total strangers!
That's how I got started!
Thanks - I've looked in my owners manual, and in the Haynes guide, and neither mentioned a cabin air filter for my 98 Camry. The dealership told me they'd replace it for me, however, and assured me I couldn't do it myself. Do I trust them?
I speaketh the TRUTH. If the TRUTH hurts then it reflects a guilty conscience.

NEVER trust a car dealer. Even normally honest ones sometimes dig themselves into holes.

Andy, I'll assume its similar to my Highlander (02). And yes, there is a part listing for the 98 CE on the parts sites.
Clean out the glove box, with door partly open push in each side, this should release the catch's - there might be a safety strap (Phillips screw) to keep it from dropping all the way down. There is a filter door right behind this, just pops out. the filter has been the same place on our last 3 Avalons also, only the 02 was harder to get to, had to pull screws around glove box door.
Try for a Bosch filter, they've got instructions!

You could call the Parts Department and ask if they have a cabin filter in stock for your 1998 Camry. ;^)

Do you trust *yourself*?
A Ruger 10/22 rifle I once had came with a strong warning in the owner's manual not to disassemble the trigger group. After some studying of the mechanism I concluded the warning was there solely to prevent the fumble- fingered from taking the complex unit to pieces and then being unable to get it back together again. After that I took it apart regularly to clean it. No problems.
