Caliper locking up.

I just bought a used 97 Corolla.

The right front caliper is locking up. This is the only one that is doing it, and the rotors and brakes pads are good,it even looks like the calipers are new also.

I was hoping it might be as simple as a sticky piston in the caliper and not a pra portioning valve or the master cylinder. although if it was the later two, I think it would effect both sides.

Any advice? Thanks, Bob

The most likely cause is a slider pin stuck in the sleeve.

I doubt its the praportioning valve, I've never seen one go bad on these cars. Easiest thing to do is take the caliper off and make sure the piston slides freely in and out of its bore and the anchor pins do the same. Should be pretty easy to diagnose.

Thanks, Ray O. I thought I would take the caliper apart today and check it out. Bob

Thanks for the advice.

For future reference, I took the caliper off, it looked and worked with air real well, so I replaced the soft brake line on that side, that fixed it.

Pretty happy with the car now. Bob

You're welcome, and sorry, I should have included the flexible brake line as a possible cause. If the brake fluid is more than 4 years old, I recommend completely bleeding the old brake fluid out, starting at the wheel farthest from the master cylinder, topping off the brake fluid reservoir as you go along to avoid getting air in the system.
