Detonation is 1. The act of exploding 2. An explosion.

I don't see how gas igniting is not an explosion or the 'act of exploding' which is the definition. And, explosion:

a.. 1.. A release of mechanical, chemical, or nuclear energy in a sudden and /often/ violent manner with the generation of high temperature and usually with the release of gases. 2.. A violent bursting as a result of internal pressure. 3.. The loud, sharp sound made as a result of either of these actions. And since it is the process of burning, it is /also/ combustion. Any other reasoning for this is wrong and has been applied by /some/ people in the field who are also wrong and have not used the accurate definition of terms.

If they would have called it the Detonation chamber would that have eased your mind?

No they are used to prevent pre-ignition, not detonation.

Thank you for most of your answers. Regarding webtv- I can afford a computer but I don't want one. With webtv, I can relax on the couch with a wireless keyboard on my lap. I can access many newsgroups at no extra charge. Email is easy (I can have up to 6 different addresses). I even have (and use) spell check. My house is set up so I don't have room for a desk (for a computer). I can use the internet and listen to music on my stereo at the same time. You people that are condemning webtv are prejudiced the same way some people are against races and religions that they are not familiar with. On topic - I have stopped down shifting except going down long hills slowly. My last brake job cost me $300.

There really is no such thing as 'pre-detonation' just pre-ignition, you can have detonation that occurs before spark, but that's not pre-detonation since detonation is the process of gas exploding, there is no 'pre' =)

This really is a complicated subject. The term detonation can be used in more than one way and in the auto world for /some/ has a specific definition, which it should not. Really a whole new term should have been used to describe 'detonation' in a combustion engine.

No...I said that 'combustion' moved the pistons, if there's any detonation involved then that's a bad thing...answer a question for me please, why do modern engines employ a 'knock sensor' (if that's the right term,- maybe ping detector?).

Combustion causes a violent expansion that causes the pistions to move. Cobustion is detonation.

Gary - even downshifting in a manual is not a simple procedure. You can shorten the life of your engine and manual transmission if you don't do it right. There have been many discussions on the do's and don't about downshifting a manual transmission already posted on this forum. The ultimate argument has been that brakes pads are inexpensive and easily replaced, whereas a clutch in a front wheel drive can be interesting. Even with a rear wheel drive car - I would prefer replacing the brake pads any day . .

That's not true, as you can see by my response to you. The OP needs to learn how to cut and paste. Webtv has had that capability since the '90s. I believe the homepage has a link to the instructions.

I agree with you that the WebTV users *can* do some things...but they won't...at least most won't. That's why they spent about $175 on the setup and then get a blurry picture from an average TV. They want it to be *easy*. They (most, I'm speaking of), don't care to take the time to learn computer techniques. They want to plug it up and go. Some have hell making a WebTV work, I know one that did. Took him over a year to use a cellphone...and that's just to make a call and answer. He still hasn't figured out how to retrieve his messages from it, and I just gave up and said RTFM. He's a perfect example of what the majority of WebTV'ers are with electronic devices.
