Idle up VSV and the Air Switching Valve diaphragm(ASV)

Hello Everyone,

I have a 1989 Camry I am working on that has an idle up problem. I have traced it to a missing idle up air switching valve which is the diaphragm that is hooked up to the intake manifold and receives a vacuum signal from the idle up VSV(electrical).

This ASV is hard to come by in our country and have it ordered. In the meanwhile, to enable A/C idle up, I am just using the VSV for the air bleed since it basically is an open/shut valve that allows an air bleed to the manifold to increase the idle.

Out of curiosity, can anyone please tell me what the actual purpose of the air switching valve diaphragm is since both parts are basically air bleeds anyway? does it in anyway amplify the bleed or just allows the idle up to be adjusted since it has a screw on it. Can the car be run without the diaphragm just in case I can't find it?

Thanks!

I think you're going to need a factory service manual to answer your question. I tend to agree with your guess that it allows the idle up to be adjusted, but it's just a guess on my part as well.
