If someone said that their dyna had a bit of play on the shaft at the front of the diff but did not have diff noises, what would be the chances of tightening the loading nut to the right preload and getting away with it.

The chances are pretty good if the play is due to insufficient loading and there is room in the collar. The chances are pretty slim if the play is due to something else like a worn universal joint.
