I'm in the process of changing the transmission fluid for our 1999 4-cyl Camry when I noticed it also has a transaxle drain and fill plugs. Questions: Are these integrated such that the transaxle and transmission share the same fluid? Or are they separate? If the latter, what is a good way to remove the fill plug?

The transaxle and the transmission do NOT share fluid (although they both take the same dextron iii stuff); you have to change them both separately. You'll need a funnel and a length of tubing to fill the differential/transaxle reservoir if you don't have a piston-type pump capable of filling upwards.
Any idea of how to get the fill plug off easily? Or get it on with a torque wrench? I can't see to find good access for this procedure. Does anyone have any first hand experience with this part of the job?
Is this the same for the V6, '97-'99 ?

"daisy chain" two combination wrenches together (try 17mm and 19mm) such that the box (round) end of one links to the "ears" of the open end on the other to increase leverage - should come right off. I always use a new aluminum gasket also. Not likely you'll have clearance to fit a torque wrench on the fill plug. (just use a single wrench for installation though)
