92 Camry Radio Aerial

Hi folks, have just replaced part of the oem car stereo in my camry, problem is that using the existing aerial which is the type built into the rear window heater foil I get really crap reception..is there some sort of aerial amplifier built into the circuit that needs to be livened up or can someone tell me where the connections are at the rear window so i dont have to pull half the car to bits trying to find it and can i unplug it at this end and add an aftermarket aerial, or do i need to start from scratch, run aerial cable from the trunk up to the head unit etc...HELP!!! thanks in advance, Ali. PS I replaced part of the oem sound system, a double DIN unit, scrapping the existing radio but keeping the tape player and adding a cd player instead.this meant building a unit to switch the output of the two units between the four speakers..it is powered from the remote 12v output of the cd player . I have the colour codes for the looms if anyone is interested, and the design for the relay board which fitted nicely into a little box abt

1 inch by 3 inch, used 2 sub mini relays and a bit of vero board, be warned you have to be real handy with a soldering iron as it's pretty fiddly. The alternative in my case was to have the tape player there but not hooked up just filling in a hole in the dash so if anyone is in the same boat and i can save you some design time let me know. Ali.

You can fit an conventional aerial no problems. My '96 uses a short 2-piece telescoping aerial which is a std Toyota thing, It is mounted on the roof at the driver's corner (car is right-hand drive, courtesy of our pomme heritage).

It sounds like your aerial connection comes into the radio/player via the multi-pin connector? If so, connecting a new aerial wont be that big a problem.

There are pre-amps around that cover MF to VHF broadcast (and run on 12v), but they can be a PIA in the prescence of interference,..being an untuned amplifier plus the axiom: 'noise is proportional to bandwidth'
