Have you seen those cars with a wire running down to the ground? I suggest installing one of those wire to remove any excess static electricity from your car.
I have also run into the shock - more in the winter months when the air is dry and I am wearing nylon parkas. I tried the ground strap - it did not help.
My (guess) is it is static electricity generated by certain types of clothing rubbing on the velour seat upholstery.
A few months ago I applied a spray - sort of lubricant - on the seat - this was suggested by an upholstery shop to allow more 'slippage' when getting in and out of the car - to prevent wear. This seemes to have had the side effect of removing the static charge. They sell anti-static sprays which might do the same thing - 'Cling Free' is one name I can think of.
Hope this helps...
Michael, tell the wife to use the fabric softener with the static gaurd! ;-D
gas station fires have been caused by this.
You used to be able to buy anti-static straps that bolted to your frame and would make contact with the ground when the vehicle wasn't moving. They worked very well.
In winter I consistently get shocked by my car's door. What I do is I bring the metal strap of my watch by the door, and wait for the spark to take place. In that case you don't feel the shock as bad as when you touch the door with your fingers.
A key or any other metal piece connected to your body would do the trick and shield you away from a sometimes unpleasant feeling.
