Check to power leads. If memory serves me, the antenna is controlled by a separate circuit so it's possible that it would work, but the radio doesn't. If it's an aftermarket radio, it probably has a fuse mounted with the radio, unlike the OEM radio.

They didn't bother to include all the parts when they sold it to you?

It probably failed at some point prior to the former owner selling the car, or it never worked. The first thing to check for is battery to the radio, both positive (12v) and earth (negative). If it has that, then you are looking at the dreaded speaker connections ie have they connected them properly and not blown the audio output...

There are two +12V wires behind the unit; one for main power and one for battery back-up, to hold the programmed radio stations, sound settings and clock, etc. If the unit is an Alpine or a Kenwood or a (I can't remember...) this yellow wire MUST be energized with +12V or the system will do just what you're saying. Also check the ground. Some people (myself included) sometimes use just the Antenna to gound the system; I have gotten away with this for the most part, but a couple times it has come back to bite me in the gotchung (Chinese for the 'part that went over the fence last'... ;)
